Every day in the UK 4 children and 6 young people under the age of 24 are told they have cancer. Thankfully many make a full recovery and go on to live normal and happy lives. But caring for children and young people with cancer is challenging. Children and young people are still growing, physically and emotionally and the needs they have are quite different to the needs of adults.
The hospital environment can be an intimidating and confusing environment for anyone, but especially for children and young adults. UHL wants to transform the quality of the accommodation and the services offered to young cancer patients and their families by creating a new children and young people's specialist cancer unit on Ward 27 of the Leicester Royal Infirmary.
The new unit will cost £1.4 million to build. Leicester Hospitals Charity is working in partnership with companies and organisations like the Robbie Anderson Cancer Trust to make this new unit a reality. We are delighted to be selected as one of the chosen charities by Leicester Tigers. Their support, and any help you can give, takes us closer to our vision of a purpose built cancer unit for children and young people.
