Leicester Tigers are delighted to announce we are continuing our initiative with the Nottingham Building Society and their Tag Rugby Programme. This has created an opportunity for primary school children to receive professional tag rugby coaching again this year.
In the first year of the programme we involved over 50 schools in and around Leicestershire, coaching and introducing tag rugby to more than 2000 year 3 and 4 children thanks to support from the Nottingham Building Society.
The Nottingham Building Society Tag Rugby Programme is a free programme run over five weeks in school, during children's PE time with a final festival held at a local rugby club. During the sessions Leicester Tigers Community coaches will be working with the pupils to develop and improve their rugby knowledge and ability in a fun and active environment, encouraging the children to lead healthy lifestyles and incorporating positive values that come from the Leicester Tigers training ground. The structure of the programme will be as follows:
Week 1: Introduction to Tag rugby and the basic rules
Week 2: Handling and ball skills
Week 3: Team work, communication and defence
Week 4: Game skills and knowledge of rules
Week 5: Game skills and decision making
Week 6: Festival at a local club competing against other local schools
The TAG rugby festival in Week 6 will be the first taste of competitive rugby for many children and will allow schools that are new to the game to participate in a fun festival with other local schools. We will also be working closely with the local clubs around Leicestershire and Rutland to provide a sustainable TAG rugby programme outside of school for those wishing to continue playing after the Tigers coaches have moved on.
