The NCL Tigers Club started in January 2007 and was a new pilot programme focussed on maximising learning opportunities created through sport. Based at the New College Leicester campus and working from a dedicated, personalised Leicester Tigers classroom, the team including Leicester Tigers RDO Matt Williams provide an exciting and varied schedule of planned activities based around the professional rugby world of Leicester Football Club PLC.
As well as the classroom lessons, PE activities are a vital part of the programme, as all the games promote team work and a great opportunity to promote a healthy, active lifestyle. Visits to Welford Road and Oval Park, Tigers training facility, will be included to create an exceptional link for NCL TIGERS CLUB members and provide a real taste of the amazing world of professional sport.
"We are delighted to be able to work with New College Leicester. Sport has been proven to be a sound method for the engagement of youngsters in educational activities. Utilising the strong role models and experience within Leicester Tigers and the passion created by sport, the 'NCL TIGERS CLUB' objectives will be to provide a consistent environment in which to raise the confidence and ability levels of all attendees (members) in Literacy, Numeracy and ICT skills. The first term was something of a trial period for the programme but with its proven success it has led the way for the expansion of this programme. The team at New College Leicester have been so enthusiastic and open to our ideas I am sure it will prove an ongoing success for all concerned."
In September 2007 the NCL Tigers Club, teamed up with the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCFS) and the Arsenal Double Club to become one of the Governments officially recognised 'Double Club' schemes. This has helped both parties to secure the required funding and continue to provide an excellent opportunity for the pupils. It also saw the expansion of NCL Tigers Club to include one session a week for a local feeder Primary School.
