The Academy of Sport
Rugby is a new dimension to add to the list of Sports Academy's at South Leicestershire College (SLC). SLC's Academy of Sport offers a new and exciting opportunity for 16-19 year olds who want to pursue their sporting interests, whilst obtaining an academic qualification from any of our full-time courses.
The Academy of Sport is aimed at both males and females who are studying or intend to study any of our full-time courses. Learners can take part in six hours of training per week (Monday, Tuesday, Friday), in their chosen sport, which will coincide with their timetable and in addition will include taking part in sport specific competitions every Wednesday afternoon. They will be trained by our highly qualified coaches here at Leicester Tigers.
As a member of the Academy of Sport you will receive a FREE sports-specific kit package. All transport to and from training venues will be provided by SLC. All learners in the Academy of Sport will be given nutritional advice, physiology and sports science support. Members will also be given the opportunity to gain the following qualifications in addition to a full-time course:
• Basic First-Aid
• N.C.F.E. Level One Award in Sport
• Level One in Drug Awareness
• NGB Qualifications
The Rugby Development Centre will be delivered by Leicester Tigers qualified coaches with training taking place at local state of the art training facilities based at Welford Road. Transprot to and from the training grounds will be provided by SLC.
All students will compete in competitive games within the British Colleges of Sport. There are 20 exclusive places available and these will be allocated after the interview/trial process.

What course can i study at the college as a member of the Academy of Sport?
Any full-time course at SLC.
How many hours of coaching / matches will i take a part in each week?
Up to 10 hours per week (up to 40 weeks per year)
Can I still play for another team outside of the college?
Yes, as long as it does not affect your attendance in the Academy. You also need to be aware of the amount of training you are doing to prevent over exertion.
What do I need to provide as a member?
A sports-specific package will be provided but you will need to provide basic equipment, for example rugby boots.
How much does it cost to be a member of the Academy of Sport?
Membership of the Academy of Sport is FREE, just your time and commitment is required.
Do I need to train in the holidays?
You will be provided with a training plan to follow outside of college time, which you will need to adhere to.
