Prima Tiger Cup set for quarters

The first four teams in this year's Prima Tiger Cup, Leicester Tigers under 10's contact competition, have been decided thanks to three festivals held on October 8 at Broadstreet, Newark and Stafford Rugby Clubs.

Teams from all around the region took part in attempt to make it through to the quarter-final stages which are played on Tigers' Welford Road pitch before a first XV fixture. Each year we are amazed at the level of skill and commitment these nine-year-olds put into the game and this year was no different.

The competition for spots was too close to call on many occasions and for the first time in over 10 years of the competition, the final place had to be decided by the toss of a coin in line with RFU continuum rules. This happened at Broadstreet RFC where there was nothing to choose between the teams from Nuneaton and Sutton Coldfield, who both excelled in their respective leagues. Both teams had been unbeaten on the day and could not be separated in the final which finished in a 0-0 draw at the end of full time. The toss of the coin favoured Nuneaton who will now move on to Welford Road with the full backing of the spirited Sutton Coldfield side.

A similar occurrence happened at the Stafford festival, with the host club missing out on a quarter-final spot to a strong Wolverhampton team on count back, after both teams finished with the same points in the leagues and an identical record of tries for and against.

Eric Barker, Prima Tiger Cup manager, and Scott Clarke, Tigers community rugby manager, have made the draw for the first quarter-final which will be played before Tigers' Guinness Premiership clash with London Irish on November 18. It sees last year's winners Lutterworth take on Kesteven in a Leicestershire against      Lincolnshire match-up, with Nuneaton playing Wolverhampton in the second quarter-final.

Our thanks go to all the teams and host clubs and their volunteers for their help in running and organising these great events and, of course, to Prima Solutions, the Loughborough-based company without whose support none of this would be possible.

The next festivals to decide the final four places are to be held on October 29 at Vipers RFC (Leicester) and Swaffham RFC (Norfolk). With a large turn-out expected at both venues, everyone here at Tigers is looking forward to what should be another great weekend in the history of this brilliant competition.
