Statement on Robinson's departure

Leicester Tigers have released the following statement in response to Andy Robinson's departure as England Head Coach on Wednesday:

Leicester Tigers chairman Peter Tom said:

"It is always a sad day when someone loses their job and we should never forget Andy Robinson's contribution to England's Rugby World Cup victory in 2003. But the decision has now been made and, like everyone else in rugby, we await developments. I think the sooner a replacement is in place the better in terms of preparing an England squad for the defence of that World Cup which is now just 10 months away.

"We all want to see England do well. Indeed, earlier this month, Premier Rugby and its clubs indicated to the RFU and the England coaching team that they would relax the previously agreed restriction on any player starting no more than three of the four autumn internationals. Indeed Tigers had five players who featured in all four games, including the England captain Martin Corry.

"Leicester Tigers, through Premier Rugby, presented to the RFU earlier in the year what we believe to be positive and constructive proposals in the form of the Weston Plan. This addresses the whole structure of the season as well as international releases and represents what we believe to be a way forward for England rugby and the domestic game. Discussions between Premier Rugby and the RFU on this subject are continuing."
