Tigers Go Close in Sevens

Figure image
Tigers missed out on Coral.co.uk Middlesex Sevens glory, as they went down 29-10 to London Wasps. Andy Key's 12-man squad put in a superb effort throughout the day, producing entertaining wins over Saracens, Worcester, Newcastle and London Irish, before eventually running out of steam against last year's beaten finalists.

Tigers got off to a disappointing start as England's Josh Lewsey scored his 10th try of the tournament with less than a minute played. Things got immediately worse for Key's men, with Wasps' young fly-half, Danny Cipriani, adding a second score shortly after.

Leicester hit back through a Tom Varndell effort with five minutes on the clock, following impressive work from Seru Rabeni. Varndell ensured he touched down in all five matches, as he handed off England Sevens colleague, Simon Amor, to fly over in the left hand corner.

Wasps recorded a third try on the stroke of half-time through that man Lewsey, with Amor converting from wide out to give the London side a 19-5 advantage at the break.

The second half started as poorly as the first for Tigers, as Chris Bishay crossed with only 45 seconds played. Ian Humphries was then harshly yellow-carded for deliberate use of the shoulder with five minutes still remaining.

Tigers gave themselves hope when Matt Smith cleverly pounced on loose ball close to half way, before sprinting 50 metres to cut the gap to 14 points. Unfortunately for Leicester, it was their opponents who had the last word, as Cipriani registered his second try of the match to leave Wasps as 29-10 winners.
