Tigers Set for Nottingham Opener

A Leicester Tigers XV will have the honour of playing the first match at Nottingham Rugby Club's new home, Meadow Lane, this August bank holiday. The National One outfit are looking to make a steady push for promotion to the Guinness Premiership, believing that a move to the ground of Notts County Football Club is another step in the right direction.

Tigers continue their challenging pre-season build-up with what will undoubtedly be a competitive and hard-fought fixture against a side growing in confidence and full of ambition. The match kicks-off at 3pm on bank holiday Monday, with organisers expecting a celebratory and friendly atmosphere to mark a new era in the history of Nottingham Rugby.

"We're very excited that we can announce a game with such a great club as Leicester for the grand opening of what will be a quality rugby stadium," says Nottingham's Director of Rugby, Glenn Delaney. "I couldn't think of a better way to introduce Meadow Lane as a rugby stadium than to play Tigers in front of what we hope will be a very healthy and enthusiastic crowd."

The two sides may share a historic local rivalry, but more importantly they are determined to work together for the benefit of both clubs. A number of Tigers players past and present have worn Nottingham colours, and vice versa.

"Leicester is a key relationship for us here at Nottingham Rugby. I've known Pat Howard for a while and he's been absolutely fantastic, as have Simon Cohen and Dusty Hare, who is of course, a Nottingham old boy.

"Our links with Tigers are clearly very strong, so we're very happy to have picked up both Dan Montagu and Alex Dodge, who left Leicester at the end of the season. We also have joint arrangements this year with Matt Parr and Rob Springall, so that relationship is obviously critical to our success. We hope that we can start returning the favour by getting these players who may still be of interest to Leicester up to Premiership standard."

Ticket prices for Nottingham Rugby v a Tigers XV on August 28, kick-off 3pm:
