Legendary venue awaits Worlds return

We're loving the World Cup action from New Zealand, but the only downside is that The Tig is now wishing the days away until the tournament comes to England - and Welford Road - in 2015.

The vast majority of English venues in the next World Cup will be soccer stadia, but Welford Road will be flying the flag and welcoming international company .

One of the great attractions of club rugby, all rugby in fact, is the mingling of supporters from both sides in the build-up to kick-off, in the stands during the match and then again in the bars and the exits after the final whistle.

Welford Road is a great place to chat to rival supporters – defending your own corner while acknowledging what rivals have to offer, championing your own favourite players at the expense of someone else’s and, lest we forget, showing your own expertise by telling everyone else where they are going wrong.

European games have brought the colour and the volume of a different type of travelling support too, with The Tig harbouring particular affection for the bright pink Stade Francais fans in the corner of the old Members’ Stand in a 2007 quarter-final and the visits of Munster’s vibrant red hordes.

Just think how much more you’ll love it when you add the patriotic supporters of two foreign countries, regardless of who they are.

In the past Tigers have welcomed Italy, Tonga and New Zealand for World Cup matches on Welford Road turf. They would all be warmly welcomed back in 2015, along with any other rugby nation.

For the time being, though, to satisfy a craving for World Cup action at Welford Road, The Tig will settle for welcoming back those 12 Leicester players back into red, white and green, regardless of where their loyalties lie in national colours.
