Tigers 'dig out' a bonus-point win at Sale

Leicester Tigers players "dug themselves out of a hole" with four second-half tries in victory over Sale Sharks in Aviva Premiership Rugby Round 7 on Friday.

In the first Aviva Premiership fixture since the return of a dozen players from World Cup duty, Tigers trailed 13-3 at Edgeley Park but rallied impressively to dominate the second half and celebrate scores by Alesana Tuilagi, Martin Castrogiovanni, Toby Flood and Marcos Ayerza.

Director of rugby Richard Cockerill said: “The key for us is to believe in what you do. That goes across the board – the coaches, the players, the conditioners. You try to keep your head and keep working.

“We had a good win in the cup last week and we’ve backed it up here.

“We were a bit inaccurate in the first half. We let ourselves down and we had to dig ourselves out of a hole.

"At half-time it was the players who solved the problems. They dealt with it and they should take the credit for it.

“That was the most pleasing thing for me because it is their team and they are the ones who have to go out and do it on the field.”

Tigers recovered from the first-half deficit to claim a bonus point with a flurry of four tries in 20 second-half minutes.

“We thought if we could get the set-piece going in their half then we could build on that,” Cockerill said.

“Toby Flood controlled field position well and the try bonus is important too because if you can get a few of them it’s like another win on the board.

“Edgeley Park has been a really hard place to win so we have to happy with that result. We are a good side when we get it right.

“It is a good win but it is just one game and we have to be better again for next week. There is a long way to go.”

Tigers return to home soil in Round 8 and face London Irish at Welford Road next Saturday. Tickets are available now. Phone the hotline on 0844 856 1880, book in person at Welford Road or book online.
