Off the ropes and trading blows!

It's just not the Tigers way to follow where others have gone before. But it seems we have little choice this season as the team chase the early pacesetters in the Aviva Premiership.

With problems over players missing at the start of the season – and not just at the World Cup but with players like Newby, Crane, Tait, Brookes and Allen injured – we find ourselves in an unusual position in the bottom half of the league table.

We’ve experienced slow starts before, but after seven rounds this is a new experience for most of us.

Normally Tigers have blazed the trail for others to follow, in terms of training and conditioning, developing our own players and also off-the-field growth as a major sporting club.

For the time being, though, the boot is on the other foot, in league points anyway. It’s not a position any of us would have chosen. But, you know what, The Tig is actually starting to enjoy it and looking forward to the rest of the fight.

The early blows have been exchanged, we’ve taken a few on the chin and at times been caught on the ropes.

But, with wise words from the corner and a fresh impetus, we’re ready to come out fighting again.

The win over Gloucester, you could say, came on the adrenalin of having guys back in club colours after their World Cup duties and just enjoying their return to Welford Road. The win at Sale Sharks came from the bloody-mindedness that has been a part of the Tigers DNA for many years as well as the ability to make the most of where mental strength takes you.

There’s no point in getting carried away because even great champions can be caught by a sucker punch from time to time, but you know what they say about a wounded animal being a dangerous animal. Seconds out...
