Young rugby players from Kesteven and Melbourne rugby clubs will run out at Welford Road after booking their place in the knockout stages of this season's Prima Tiger Cup.

Kesteven Under-10s finished top of their pool at the opening festival of this season’s competition, which was held at Mellish RFC on Sunday.

Kesteven beat Newark, Sleaford and hosts Mellish and drew with Southwell, scoring 10 tries in the process and conceding none.

It means they now qualify for the last eight of the Prima Tiger Cup, which will be played at Welford Road before Tigers take on French league leaders Clermont Auvergne in Europe’s Heineken Cup on Saturday, December 17.

They will be joined by Derbyshire side Melbourne, who also qualified after finishing top of their group with four wins from four games. Melbourne beat teams from Scunthorpe, Stamford, Nottingham Boots Corsairs and Wets Bridgford, scoring 16 tries and conceding none.

“The festival was a great start to this season’s Prima Tiger Cup and Mellish were fantastic hosts,” Scott Clarke, Tigers community manager, said. “All of the games were very competitive and played in a great spirit.

“Congratulations to all of the teams who took part, and to Kesteven and Melbourne who will join us at Welford Road for the quarter-finals.”

Now in its 17th season, the Prima Tiger Cup is supported by Prima Solutions and is open to under-10s teams from across the country with more than 50 clubs entering this year.

The remaining quarter-finalists will be decided at three more festivals, to be held in the next month at Lutterworth RFC, Swaffham RFC and Stoke RFC.
