Three former winners of the Prima Tiger Cup have booked their places in this season's quarter-finals at Welford Road.

Oakham, the defending champions, were joined in the last eight by 2010 winners Silhillians and Syston, the joint winners in 1998 after winning through from their local festival held at Lutterworth RFC.

Scott Clarke, Tigers community manager, said: “The Prima Tiger Cup is now in its 18th season and has a rich history which makes it an attractive competition for teams up and down the country.

“This year we have had around 50 teams enter and it is great to see the games played in such a great spirit.

“Congratulations to all of the teams who were a credit to their clubs and to former winners Oakham, Silhillians and Syston, who will join us at Welford Road for the quarter-finals. And thank you to Lutterworth RFC for hosting a fantastic festival."

Oakham Under-10s head coach Ben Hunt hailed a “complete performance” by his team after wins against Leicester Forest, Oadby Wyggstonian, Market Bosworth and Market Harborough.

“The boys were fantastic,” he said. “It was the most complete performance in the four years they have been playing.

“We are all thrilled to be playing at Welford Road. And we are thrilled that the boys came out on a really big day and performed and really enjoyed themselves.”

Syston beat Wolverhampton, Hinckley and hosts Lutterworth and drew with Ashby to qualify top of League B.

“We are so chuffed that the lads made it to Welford Road,” said their head coach Lee Winterton. “It is a cracking early Christmas present for them. Win, lose or draw we will make sure we go out and enjoy ourselves.”

Tigers and England back Mathew Tait visited Sunday's festival and posed for photos and signed autographs.

The quarter-finals will be held at Welford Road before the Heineken Cup clash with French giants Clermont Auvergne on December 17.

Lincolnshire side Kesteven and Melbourne from Derbyshire qualified for the quarter-finals from the Mellish festival. The rest of the line-up will be decided over the next two weekends with festivals at Swaffham and Stoke rugby clubs.
