Tigers coaches have praised the standard of this season's Prima Tiger Cup after a series of hard-fought quarter-finals at Welford Road.

Under-10s teams from Bury St Edmunds, Kesteven, Oakham, Melbourne, Silhillians, Stourbridge, Syston and West Norfolk rugby clubs were all involved in the last eight on Saturday.

The games kicked off before Tigers’ Heineken Cup clash with Clermont Auvergne and hundreds of spectators saw Bury St Edmunds, Oakham, Melbourne and Stourbridge secure quarter-final victories.

It means they will return to Welford Road for the semi-finals on the weekend of January 21, when Tigers take on Aironi Rugby in the Heineken Cup.

Scott Clarke, Tigers community manager, said: “Congratulations to the players, parents and coaches for a series of tough and exciting games.

“The quality, enthusiasm and commitment from all of the players was excellent and the games were played in the right spirit. Everyone was a real credit to their clubs.”

Syston Under-10s head coach Lee Winterton, whose team were knocked out by Bury St Edmunds, summed up the day for the teams involved. He said: “The loved their day.

“They are a really good set of lads and they can be proud of their achievements in the competition.

“We said that win, lose or draw, we were coming to Welford Road to enjoy the day, and that’s what we did – and we got to watch Tigers in the Heineken Cup as well.”

The Prima Tiger Cup is supported by Loughborough-based Prima Solutions. It is now in its 18th season and is open to under-10s teams from across the country.
