We must keep this intensity - Cockerill

Richard Cockerill says Leicester Tigers must maintain the intensity of the performances which have taken the team up the Aviva Premiership table.

Tigers claimed a bonus-point win at Worcester Warriors in their Christmas fixture to move into fifth place in the league table and now have back-to-back home games against Sale Sharks on New Year’s Day and London Wasps on January 7.

Director of rugby Cockerill insists the players must maintain their form for the second half of the season.

“Worcester is never an easy place to play, a lot of sides have found it difficult there,” he said after the 32-13 win at Sixways.

“We had enough opportunities to score the four tries and we kept our composure and our discipline when they were getting some pressure and the crowd got on their feet in the second half.

“To carry on the intensity we played with against Clermont was great. We’ve had a tough run of fixtures – Ulster, Gloucester away, Saints, Clermont home and away, then Worcester away – and the players relish the opportunities to play at that level.

“The Worcester game was as big as any we’ve had so far. But now that applies to the match against Sale on Sunday.

“The squad are enjoying the challenge of keeping the intensity we have shown in those big games for every game.

“The guys who came into the squad did a good job at Worcester and they will all be needed to put their bodies on the line because we now have another tough run.

“Sale are a good side, they’re going well at the moment and the table is still very tight so we cannot afford to lose any ground.”
