Smiles for Newby on Tigers return

Craig Newby says it is good to be playing again after making his first appearance in a Leicester Tigers shirt since leading out the team in last season's Aviva Premiership Rugby Final.

Newby made his comeback from a knee injury for the Development XV in their 80-5 Aviva Premiership Rugby A League victory over Leeds Carnegie at Welford Road on Monday night.

Tigers, the defending ‘A’ League champions, ran in 12 tries to secure second place in the Northern Conference and a semi-final away to Exeter Braves on Monday, April 23.

Newby came on as a replacement for the last 20 minutes for his first game in more than seven months.

“It was good to be back out there playing,” he said after the final whistle. “I would have loved to have been out there for longer and got more game time but we wanted to get 20 minutes out of the way and tick that off.

“We have done some great work with the strength and conditioning boys at Oval Park but you can’t quite replicate a game in training. It was good to clear out and make tackles properly.

“My last game was the Aviva Premiership Final last season. It’s been seven-and-a-half months and now I’ve had a taste of getting back into it I will be looking to build on that.”
