Murphy pleased to win ugly

Geordan Murphy described his drop goal that clinched a dramatic 20-19 Aviva Premiership victory over Saracens as "the ugliest kick I have ever hit".

Murphy’s kick deep into added time at Vicarage Road ended a remarkable 26 phases that had seen Tigers battle their way from a lineout 35m out to territory deep in the Saracens 22.

It gave Tigers a first win in five games against Sarries and moved Leicester back into the Aviva Premiership top four with seven rounds to play, starting with the visit of Newcastle Falcons to Welford Road this Saturday (kick-off 3pm).

“We had worked very hard,” says Murphy. “The forwards had battled for every inch and they got us into a position in Saracens territory.

“I didn’t think we were going to get a penalty. We worked so hard for 26 phases and it was one where you think about having a go for a drop goal.

“Floody was on the left and pretty well marked and I stepped in behind the breakdown.

“It’s probably the ugliest kick I have ever hit. It was absolutely horrendous but thankfully it went over.

“I dropped it and it came up at a bad angle so it was one of those that I had to get my foot on it and force it through. It went dead straight but it didn’t go very high but it doesn’t really matter – no-one will remember that down the line.”
