Parling to make first England start

Figure image
Geoff Parling will make his first start for England in the Six Nations clash with Wales at Twickenham this Saturday (kick-off 4pm).

Parling, 28, has won two international caps from the bench in England’s first two games of the championship against Scotland and Italy.

The second rower is named in an England pack that includes his Leicester Tigers teammates Dan Cole and Tom Croft.

Parling’s inclusion for Tom Palmer of Stade Francais is one of four changes to the England starting XV by head coach Stuart Lancaster.

His Tigers teammate Manu Tuilagi returns at centre, where he will partner Brad Barritt (Saracens). Owen Farrell moves across to fly-half with Charlie Hodgson, his Saracens teammate, ruled out with a finger injury.

Lee Dickson (Northampton Saints) replaces Ben Youngs at scrum-half for his first start with the Tigers number 9 taking his place on the bench. Scarlets No8 Ben Morgan will also make his first start in place of Northampton’s Phil Dowson.

Youngs will be joined among the replacements by Tigers fly-half Toby Flood.

Lancaster said: “It's been a good start with two wins but we've got real competition for places and Lee, Ben and Geoff deserve an opportunity to start this game.

“It means that Phil (Dowson) and Ben (Youngs) will provide a different role from the bench and it's great to have Courtney and Toby, who can also give us options in what I am sure will be a full-on encounter.

"Owen has trained throughout and knows our patterns and plays so we are fully confident in his ability to run the game from 10 and we are looking forward to seeing how Brad and Manu gel together in the centre.

"It's our first home game of the RBS 6 Nations which we are really excited about and we are sure the crowd will get behind us just as the travelling supporters have done in Scotland and Italy. Playing at Twickenham makes it extra special for us and I know we will get all the encouragement we need."

Make it a rugby double this Saturday. Join us at Welford Road for Tigers v Newcastle Falcons in the Aviva Premiership, the only place to watch the whole game this weekend. We will be recording England’s game with Wales and showing it as live in the bars around Welford Road after full-time in the Tigers match.
