Honours were shared at Welford Road in the annual Varsity matches between De Montfort University and the University of Leicester.

In the women’s match, tries from Jen Micklewright, Alice Ronson and two from Fiona Fletcher helped University of Leicester to a 22-5 victory, increasing their run of wins to nine in the annual encounter.

The men’s game followed and tries from Ben Monsey and Kieran Stone enabled De Montfort University to run out winners by 20-8.

On an entertaining evening at the home of Leicester Tigers, the women’s match got the ball rolling and De Montfort enjoyed possession and territory in the early stages before Leicester gained the opening points as a tap penalty presented an opportunity for scrum-half Micklewright to score.

That try supplied the only points of the first half, but Leicester increased their lead early in the second period when an attacking scrum allowed replacement Fletcher to run beneath the posts. Skipper Fern Dyer added the conversion.

Fletcher got her second when she burrowed her way into the corner to stretch the lead to 17 points.

De Montfort’s first points came just after midway in the second half as centre Abi Mullin drove over.

But Leciester struck back again when they managed n overlap on the left for centre Ranson to run in.

In the men’s match DMU took the honours for the first time since 2009.

Fly-half Adam Frost kicked the opening points from a 13th-minte penalty and De Montfort quickly enforced their advantage with a try from flanker Monsey after the forwards had smashed their way up towards the line. Frost’s conversion took the lead into double figures.

The second half started with another successful kick from Frost after Leicester were penalised 40 metres from their own line.

The second try of the evening came after a good run from Frost got DMU on the attack and tighthead prop Kieran Stone arrived in support to run in under the posts. The conversion made it 20-0 with three-quarters of the match gone.

Leicester got off the mark with a penalty from Jonny Pryce with just 10 minutes remaining and they finished strongly as captain James Perrin dived over for a try after a number of attempts had been thwarted from within reach of the DMU line.

Leicester Tigers and England Saxons prop Kieran Brookes joined representatives of the universities to perform the on-pitch presentations to a jubilant De Montfort team.
