Droglites enjoy their day at Oval Park

Leicester Tigers director of rugby Richard Cockerill was among the try-scorers as the Droglites beat Leicestershire Police 28-14 in a fund-raising game at Oval Park on Sunday.

The match was organised in aid of the Matt Hampson Foundation and Matt was among a big crowd enjoying the day, alongside Leicestershire Chief Constable Simon Cole, who is also a Tigers season ticket holder.

Darren Grewcock, Steve Booth and Mike Umaga joined Cockerill on the scoresheet.

“I was about a yard out, picked up at ruck, bounced off the referee and scored,” says Cockerill. “I don’t think he wanted to disallow it!

“There are certain causes you really want to help and particularly the Matt Hampson Foundation.

“It was a tough game, the Police guys were a decent team and I was certainly feeling stiff by the time I got back to work at Oval Park on Monday!”

Matt Robinson organised the Police team while Steve Wills brought together the Droglites line-up which included former first-teamers Rob Tebbutt, Stuart Redfern and Mark Charles, with Steve Kenney and Harry Ellis just two of the former Tigers favourites enjoying the action from the sidelines.

The Droglites will be getting their boots on again to play against Worcester Warriors Vets at Sixways on Wednesday, May 9 (8pm).

Steve Wills said: “It should be another really good game. They got in contact with us about playing the game during Walk4Matt and it should be a good night.”

Tickets are £5 and will be on sale in the Droglites Bar in the Goldsmiths Stand at Welford Road during the Aviva Premiership match against Bath on May 5.
