Tigers help pupils Play 4 Health

More than 120 children took to the Welford Road pitch for a day of Olympics-themed activities.

Pupils from Hazel, Queensmead, Braunstone Community, Sparkenhoe, St Barnabas, Woodstock and Granby primary schools were all taking part in Leicester Tigers’ Playing 4 Health programme

The children took on a series of physical activities based on Olympics disciplines such as the javelin, shot putt and running.

Jamie Smyth, Tigers Player for Health officer, said: “Each school represented a country taking part in the Olympics, they had their own opening ceremony and there was a medal ceremony at the end as well.

“The idea is to help get children more active. There is a focus on improving core skills such as balance, coordination, running and jumping and to encourage Olympic values such as friendship, respect and excellence.”

Playing 4 Health sees Tigers, Leicester City Football Club, Leicestershire County Crick Club and Leicester Riders Basketball Club working together with the Leicester Sports Partnership Trust, NHS Leicester City and Leicestershire and Rutland Sport.

It aims to provide free multi-skills coaching sessions across Leicester for around 3,600 children aged eight and nine.

Each school receives five weeks of coaching, focused around the physical capabilities of the children rather than sports specific ability.
