Oakham win inaugural Schools Sevens

Oakham School were the winners of the first Matt Hampson Foundation Schools Sevens.

They won all four of their pool games before beating the King’s School from Grantham in the final of the Cup competition at Welford Road.

Six school teams played their part in the under-14 tournament, supported by the Leicester Tigers community team.

The group games were held at the University of Leicester Playing Fields in Stoughton Road before the finals were hosted at Welford Road.

Oakham scored 16 tries in their four pool victories before beating King’s School 38-28 in an exciting final.

Lincolnshire’s Stamford School beat Gresham’s School, Norfolk 29-7 in the final of the Shield competition. Langley School in Norfolk overturned a 19-7 group stage defeat to Leicester Grammar School to win the Plate Final 29-22.

Former Tigers, England and British Lions players Rory Underwood and Harry Ellis were joined by Roy Jackson, chairman of the Matt Hampson Foundation, in presenting the schools with their trophies.

The schools raised funds for the Matt Hampson Foundation, which provides support and inspiration for young people seriously injured through sport.
