More than 200 Leicester schoolchildren will take part in a festival of Olympics-themed activities on Thursday to mark the end of the new Playing For Health initiative.

Playing For Health was launched this season by Leicester Tigers, Leicester City Football Club, Leicestershire County Cricket Club and Leicester Riders basketball team to help children increase their activity and fitness levels.

The programme, which is also supported by the Leicester Sports Partnership Trust, NHS Leicester City and Leicestershire and Rutland Sport, sees the four teams provide multi-skills coaching for children at 60 Leicester primary schools. Local secondary school pupils have also been taking on leadership training from each club as part of the programme.

Now pupils from 15 of the schools, plus 60 young leaders, are set to join coaches from the professional clubs for the festival at the University of Leicester Playing Fields in Stoughton Road.

Scott Clarke, Tigers community manager, said: “Playing For Health has been a great success this year, grasping the opportunity created by the Olympics to enthuse and work with youngsters at local primary schools.

“The pupils have worked really hard during the coaching sessions and, while having fun, have raised their activity levels and, hopefully, their enjoyment of sport as well.

“More than 300 coaching sessions have taken place with more than 3,600 eight, nine and 10 year olds.

“Thanks to the support of NHS Leicester City, the four professional clubs have been able to work together to raise the issue of a healthy and active lifestyle and encourage youngsters to lead a healthier lifestyle for a better future.”
