Leicester Tigers mascot Welford joined the Queen and 10,000 invited guests at a Diamond Jubilee Picnic at Burghley House near Stamford.

The Lord Lieutenants of Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, and Rutland hosted the event to commemorate the Queen’s 60 years on the throne.

Club mascot Welford and the Maul, the Tigers roadshow vehicle, joined thousands of people for a day of celebrations in the grounds of the stately home.

They hosted rugby activities including the Speed Pass Challenge, allowed fans to have photos with the LV= Cup and passed on information about the club and the Junior Tigers Club.

Welford met excited fans, young and old. He sang along and danced to performances from a range of bands and choirs including the Royal Airforce Regiment Band, the Uppingham Community College Band and Stamford Endowed School Band.

Welford also tried his hand at some of the entertainments, including historical re-enactments and a fairground carousel, and was wowed by the Red Arrows and Battle of Britain flypast.

The Maul continues its summer tour at the Lincolnshire Show on Wednesday, June 20 and Thursday, June 21. The Maul will also be at the Royal Norfolk show on Wednesday, June 27 and Thursday, June 28 and at the Olympic Torch Relay in Leicester on Monday, July 2.
