More than 200 Leicester schoolchildren took part in a festival of Olympics-themed activities to mark the end of the new Playing For Health initiative.

Playing 4 Health was launched this season by Leicester Tigers, Leicester City Football Club, Leicestershire County Cricket Club and Leicester Riders basketball team to help children increase their activity and fitness levels.

The programme, which is also supported by the Leicester Sports Partnership Trust, NHS Leicester City and Leicestershire and Rutland Sport, saw the four teams provide multi-skills coaching for children at 60 Leicester primary schools. Local secondary school pupils have also been taking on leadership training from each club as part of the programme.

It ended with pupils from 15 of the schools, plus 60 young leaders, joining coaches from the professional clubs for a festival at the University of Leicester Playing Fields in Stoughton Road.

Matt Weir, assistant director of sports at the University of Leicester, said: “It was a great opportunity for us to support and be part of this programme. We were delighted to help Tigers and the other sports clubs encourage young pupils from the city schools to have fun and be active taking up the Olympic challenge.”

The children took on a series of physical activities based on Olympics disciplines such as the javelin, shot putt and running. Each school also represented a country taking part in the Olympics.

“The idea is to help get children more active,” said Tigers community manager Scott Clarke. “There is a focus on improving core skills such as balance, coordination, running and jumping and to encourage Olympic values such as friendship, respect and excellence.”
