Strength in numbers at Welford Road

Figure image
There are now at least 13,000 people alongside The Tig desperately counting down the days to the start of the new Leicester Tigers season.

That is the number of supporters who have already committed to a Leicester Tigers season ticket for 2012/13.

It’s a tribute to the loyalty of the fans, the warmth of the welcome and the success of the club that this figure is larger than the capacity of half the grounds Tigers will visit in the coming season.

The Madjeski Stadium, which Reading FC shares with London Irish, is the only top-flight rugby venue bigger than Welford Road, with a capacity of around 100 more than the 24,000 who can share in matchday with Tigers.

But there are six home grounds in the Aviva Premiership which could not accommodate all of Tigers’ season ticket holders simultaneously - Bath, Exeter, Newcastle, Sale, Wasps and Worcester all had capacities last season of less than 13,000.

Total attendances at Welford Road reached almost 350,000 for first-team games last season and it gladdens The Tig’s heart to know so many people want to see ‘our team’ in match action and that so many of them want to commit to every home game as season ticket holders.

Now, only another two months to wait…
