Leicester Tigers' pre-season preparations stepped up a gear with a week-long training camp at Bishop Burton College.

The Leicester first-team squad, including the club’s internationals who were part of their country’s summer tours, set up base at the college near Beverley in North Yorkshire.

A £2.9million Centre for Sport & Fitness is the focal point of the Bishop Burton College's Sports Village, which hosted the Tigers players, coaches and backroom staff. The facilities include a state-of-the-art fitness suite, 4G artificial turf pitch and outdoor grass pitches and sports hall.

“It was ideal for us and what we wanted to achieve during our pre-season camp,” said Tigers director of rugby Richard Cockerill. “All of the facilities were excellent and allowed us to get through the work that we wanted.

“The food and accommodation was outstanding and all of our needs were catered for.

“We’ve got that work in the bank as we look to put some of the pieces together in our pre-season fixtures, starting away to Jersey this weekend.”

Tigers close links with Bishop Burton College are underlined with the club’s Academy and Community team setting up camp there this week.

The Academy squad are knuckling down on their pre-season camp while the Community team are putting young players through their paces on a residential Tigers Rugby Course.

This is the third year that Tigers have held a residential course at the college, and Scott Clarke, Tigers community manager, said: "We have run two residential courses at Bishop Burton College and they have been huge successes.

"It is fantastic to be there at the same time as the Academy, and will really give players on our Rugby Course a feel of what it would be like to spend a week as an elite rugby player.

"It is an outstanding opportunity for young and ambitious rugby players aged under-13 to under-18 who have aspirations to develop their game.

"Tigers coaches run a full week's coaching focussed on improving skills, game understanding and strength and conditioning."

James Earl, Bishop Burton’s director of sport and sporting partnerships, said: “To host a world class rugby club such as Leicester Tigers is testament to the high quality facilities and services we provide.

"Our sport and fitness facilities are second to none regionally, providing everything our students, local community and professional clubs may need.”
