Sunshine rugby, whatever the weather

August Bank Holiday means many things to many people. For children it's the less-than-subtle indicator that the school holidays are almost over, for city-centre stores it's the signal to unveil Christmas decorations and for the weatherman it's time to tell us to remember a coat.

It’s also time for the last pre-season fixture before the Aviva Premiership Rugby season kicks off again.

For Leicester Tigers this generally also means the only home game of the build-up to the new league campaign.

After two weeks on the road this summer – in Jersey and in Belfast – Tigers are back on home ground.

Nottingham, a team who have enjoyed strong links with the Tigers over a number of years, are the visitors this Saturday and there is more than enough in prospect to blow away concerns about a return to school, Christmas shopping for relatives you didn’t even know you had and the weather’s expected turn for the worse.

This is the first home game since the middle of May, a chance to welcome back Geordan Murphy for his 16th season as a Tigers player, to check out the summer signings and perhaps see a glimpse of the future in some of the young prospects promoted to the first-team squad.

The games against Jersey and Ulster were about blowing the cobwebs off and getting some game-time for every member of the squad. Now Nottingham is a rehearsal ahead of the league opener at London Welsh on September 2.

There will be new faces, new combinations and, as usual, some new interpretations among referees.

And with an away game on the opening weekend of the Aviva Premiership programme, Saturday is the perfect opportunity to take the edge off the withdrawal symptoms inflicted by three months without a home game. The Tig is in the queue already!
