Plenty to build on, says Waldrom

New signings Rob Andrew and Vereniki Goneva will be the better for making their Leicester Tigers debuts in the 38-13 victory over London Welsh, says team-mate Thomas Waldrom.

Second rower Andrew played his part in a forward pack that laid the platform for five Tigers tries against the Aviva Premiership newcomers. Fijian wing Goneva, meanwhile, opened his Tigers account with the fifth and final try of Sunday’s win at the Kassam Stadium.

Waldrom said: “It’s always good to get your first game under your belt. I know what that is like after playing my first game two years ago against Northampton.

“You can build from now and be part of the Tigers Family, which is a great thing to be part of.”

Waldrom scored the opening two tries of Sunday’s win to give Tigers a first opening day win since 2008, but the England international says there is plenty to work on ahead of Saturday’s clash with Worcester Warriors at Welforfd Road (kick off 3pm).

“We are pleased with the result but we weren’t pleased with conceding a couple of tries at the end of the first half,” said Waldrom. “It’s a small step towards a long season.

“We are building combinations, we have added new guys to the squad and have guys coming back to the squad such as Jordan Crane, who has had a long lay-off, and it’s great to have him back.

“We’ve got something to build on and that will happen as the boys get more games under their belts.”
