Unlucky Benjamin made to wait

Miles Benjamin will have to wait to make his Leicester Tigers first-team debut after suffering a neck injury in Aviva Premiership 'A' League action.

A summer arrival from Worcester Warriors, wing Benjamin made his first appearance in a Tigers shirt in the ‘A’ league game at Northampton but was injured at the close of the first half.

“He got a pretty nasty blow on the neck,” said director of rugby Richard Cockerill.

“Injuries are disappointing but it will give an opportunity for somebody else to come into the squad. The club has always been about the whole squad, the sum of the parts rather than the individual.”

Cockerill confirmed that fellow summer signings Adam Thompstone and Dan Bowden are now fully fit and available after missing part of the pre-season period with injury. Both played in the ‘A’ League opener against Northampton and Newcastle Falcons.

Former London Irish wing Thompstone was added to the Tigers matchday 23 for the Aviva Premiership match against Harlequins on Saturday and made his debut as a second-half replacement.

Tigers captain Geordan Murphy suffered a bruised knee during the first half of the Aviva Premiership match against Saracens at Wembley and missed the Quins match.

“He will probably be out for three or four weeks,” said Cockerill. “It’s disappointing for him but that is the game. Hopefully he’ll recover quicker than that.”

Manu Tuilagi also missed the match against defending Premiership champions Quins, but Cockerill said: “He had a bruised shoulder from the game last week, but it should just be one week.”

Tom Croft, Ben Youngs and Louis Deacon continue their recovery from long-term absence, while Mathew Tait and Ed Slater are also approaching full fitness after injury.
