Tigers hosts Student World Fair

The biggest gathering of foreign universities in the UK is visiting Leicester Tigers to reach more students with information about studying a degree abroad.

Up to 30 universities from all over the world will be at Welford Road next Monday to advise students in the region about the overseas option to higher education as part of The Student World Fair going on tour.

Students, parents and teachers will be able to find out about studying in Australia, Canada, China, Germany, Holland, Hong Kong, Italy, New Zealand, Spain, Switzerland and USA when the roadshow comes to Tigers on Monday, October 1 (4pm-7pm).

Jemma Davies, from The Student World, said: “We have seen an increase of up to 25 per cent in the attendance of students and overseas universities since the first Student World Fair in October last year.

“That represents a real demand among students for information about gaining a degree abroad and among overseas universities recognising the potential created by the rise in tuition fees and the limited undergraduate places here in the UK.

“The Roadshow will provide more opportunities for students in the Leicester area to meet representatives from overseas universities and make an informed decision about going abroad for their degree.”

A survey commissioned by The Student World revealed that around three-quarters of students would consider a university abroad despite not knowing enough about the option of studying a degree overseas.

Jacobs University in Germany and Rutgers, and the State University of New Jersey, USA, are among those looking to increase their student population from the UK.

Anna Boyd, admissions counsellor at Jacobs University, said: “It appears that the mindset of UK students is changing in terms of studying abroad which is one of the main reasons why we are increasing our recruitment activity.

“We have definitely seen more interest from the UK since we exhibited at The Student World Fairs but what has been really positive is not just the amount of students but the quality of students.”

Tania Castaneda, director of international recruitment and enrolment at Rutgers University, said: “The Roadshow is an opportunity for us to get out to the regions and spend time meeting students and their families, as well as schools and colleges.

“It’s an educational benefit to us too. As more students from the UK look abroad for their degree, we are looking to learn more about the educational system that they are coming from to help ensure it’s a good match overall.”
