This season's Prima Tiger Cup got off to a flying start with a thrilling first festival of the season on Sunday.

Swaffham RFC in Norfolk welcomed under-10s teams from across the Eastern Counties to kick-off this year’s competition.

Wisbech Under-10s enjoyed a 100 per cent winning record in League A, securing hard-earned victories against Swaffham, North Walsham and Lowestoft & Yarmouth. It secured the Cambridgeshire side their place in the Super 16s stage of the Prima Tiger Cup, which will be played at Welford Road before Leicester Tigers’ huge Heineken Cup clash with Treviso in December.

Wisbech will be joined by Suffolk side Newmarket and Wymondham from Norfolk, who finished level at the top of League B. They both won their opening games against West Norfolk and Diss to set up a final match showdown, which saw Wymondham come from behind at half-time to draw 1-1.

“The tournament was a great start to this season’s Prima Tiger Cup and Swaffham were fantastic hosts,” Scott Clarke, Tigers community manager, said. “All of the games were very competitive and played in a great spirit.

“Congratulations to all of the teams who took part, and to Newmarket, Wisbech and Wymondham, who will join us at Welford Road for the Super 16s.”

Now in its 19th season, the Prima Tiger Cup is supported by Prima Solutions of Loughborough, and is open to under-10s teams from across the country. More than 40 clubs entered this year’s competition.

The remaining quarter-finalists will be decided at three more festivals, to be held in the next three weeks at Mellish, Lutterworth and Stoke rugby clubs.
