Toby Flood could not hide his frustration after England’s 20-14 defeat to Australia at Twickenham on Saturday.

Manu Tuilagi scored England’s only try of the contest on the stroke of half-time while Flood kicked the rest of the points with three first-half penalties.

England, who also included Dan Cole, Geoff Parling, Thomas Waldrom and Tom Youngs in the starting XV with Ben Youngs coming off the bench, held a 14-11 lead at the break. However, three second-half penalties for the Wallabies full-back Berrick Barnes turned the game Australia’s way.

“I think it’s the most frustrated I’ve been in an international shirt for a long time,” said Flood. “There were a lot of little looks of how did we manage not to win that?

“We weren’t able to be clinical and take our opportunities. We did a lot of good things, we were unfortunate with a couple of decisions and I think we were unfortunate with a couple of missed opportunities, but we weren’t good enough.

“To come out in that second-half in a position of being up and for Berrick to kick those three goals and take the game away from us a little bit, that hurts.”

Elsewhere, Martin Castrogiovanni won his 90th cap for Italy in their 42-10 defeat to New Zealand, which extended the All Blacks unbeaten run to 19 games. Marcos Ayerza started for Argentina in Lille but was unable to prevent the Pumas from going down to a 39-22 defeat to France. And Vereniki Goneva started for Fiji at centre at Munster's Thomond Park against an Ireland XV which ran out 53-0 winners.
