Loughborough and Wymondham reached the semi-finals of the Prima Tiger Cup after a series of excellent games at Welford Road on Sunday.

Leicestershire side Loughborough will return for the semi-finals of the under-10s competition after winning their two games on Saturday before Tigers’ Heineken Cup clash with Benetton Treviso.

Loughborough beat Newmarket 2-0 before enjoying a 3-0 win over Leek in the quarter-finals. Leek had earlier beaten Tamworth 2-1 in a hard-fought clash.

They will be joined in the last four by Norfolk side Wymondham. They beat Wisbech from Cambridgeshire 4-1 in the Super 16s round before a 5-1 victory over Market Bosworth in the quarter-finals. Market Bosworth reached the quarter-finals with a 3-1 win over Lichfield.

Wymondham U10s head coach Jon Hood said: “I am so proud of the boys, they have done really well. To play at Welford Road has been great. They have been so excited for such a long time to actually come here and play has been a fantastic experience for the whole club.”

Dave Sharratt, Loughborough U10s head coach, added: “The kids really enjoyed it. It’s been a great laugh and a big experience for them all.

“The team have played fantastically. We swapped every player over so they all got a chance to play regardless of how we were doing. They all did brilliantly.”

The Prima Tiger Cup is an under 10s contact tournament supported by Loughborough-based Prima Solutions, which attracts teams from across the Tigers region.

Loughborough and Wymondham join Kenilworth, from Warwickshire, and Paviors, from Nottingham, in the last four. The semi-finals will be held at Welford Road before the hugely-anticipated Heineken Cup clash with French heavyweights Toulouse on the weekend of January 19.

Lichfield, Newmarket, Tamworth and Wisbech will take part in quarter-finals of the sister competition, the Prima Tiger Bowl, which will be held at the LV= Cup game with London Wasps (weekend of January 26). They will join teams from Market Harborough, Newark, Nottingham Boots Corsairs and Syston rugby clubs.
