Two-try Morris enjoys winning form

Niall Morris scored a try double at the Madejski Stadium but could be forgiven for any disappointment in just missing out on a rare Aviva Premiership hat-trick.

Leicester Tigers wing Morris opened the scoring in the 31-9 win over London Irish with a smart finish on the right and also scored the bonus-point fourth try with a run through the heart of the Irish defence.

He was just a miss-timed tackle away from a hat-trick when he was tackled without the ball by Irish flanker Jamie Gibson as he looked to dot down after chasing his own chip ahead for thr team's third try. Referee Luke Pearce awarded a penalty try and showed Gibson a yellow card.

“We made a good start and got 14 points up quite quickly,” said Morris.

“Then just after half-time they got back at us, got a bit of momentum and put us under pressure. But it was a good result in the end.

“We knew if we had any slip-ups then they could punish us, but if we kept playing our game and kept on top of them we were hopeful of the win.

“Getting the bonus point as well was a great finish for us.”

The opening score came as fly-half Toby Flood and Morris combined on opposite sides of the pitch at a penalty.

“I was near Floody when the penalty was given and I just said to him to have a look to see if the cross-kick was on,” he said.

“Their guys started walking towards the penalty so Floody thought it was worth a try and it worked out well.

“Then at the end it was nice to get the last try for the bonus point. Luckily Manu was on the outside of me so I think the they were trying to defend him and I was able to get throuhg and score.”

Morris now has his sights set on a return to Welford Road and Saturday’s match against Gloucester.

“The top six or seven are still separated by just a few points so it was massive to get five points at Irish and we’re delighted with that,” he added.

“We’re looking forward to getting back to Welford Road on Saturday in front of a big home crowd.”
