Who would have guessed it?

The critics say this season's Heineken Cup has been 'predictable'. If that is the case, perhaps they could give us a proper pointer for Sunday and save us all the suspense?

Sunday sees Tigers host Toulouse in a winner-takes-all game which is possibly without equal in recent seasons in the competition.

After five rounds of fixtures, it all comes down to one game between two genuine European giants at a sell-out Welford Road.

In The Tig’s heart of hearts, this is what we were probably hoping for when the balls were drawn which put Tigers, Toulouse, Ospreys and Treviso in the same pool back in the summer.

But the only predictable thing about Pool 2 was that it was always going to be competitive. Daylight between any of the teams was hugely unlikely.

If this competition is so predictable, how many of the critics would have believed that 10 minutes into the Round 2 game at home to the Ospreys, Tigers would be 10 points behind, staring down the barrel after defeat in Round 1, but would come back and not only win but take a try bonus point into the bargain?

Did they also know in advance that all-conquering Toulouse would fare so badly in Swansea?

Everyone knew that Treviso’s team of Italian internationals would make it tough for all-comers on home ground, but hand on heart would they have thought Toulouse would miss out on a bonus point in their win there or that Tigers would still be playing from behind with just a couple of minutes remaining on the clock before taking the win?

Would they also have predicted that the weather conditions in Italy would have been worse than for any Aviva Premiership match in England this season?

If you’d got all that right in advance then perhaps you would have been brave enough to take a punt on the eventual winner at the Liberty Stadium last weekend during a rollercoaster second half? Would you have stuck your neck out and said Tigers would come back from 10 points down again and that Ospreys would miss their kicks at goal? Would you have gone for an away win after that second-half turnaround? Or would you have sat on the fence and gone with a draw?

What you can safely predict is that Pool 2 will come to an incredible close at Welford Road on Sunday. The Tig is counting the hours already.
