Tigers pitch covered ahead of Euro clash

Work is well underway to protect the Welford Road pitch from the current arctic conditions in readiness for Sunday's crunch Heineken Cup clash with Toulouse (3pm).

The playing surface has been protected by frost sheets since last week and is now covered by Sports Stadia Service’s MacLeod heatdome.

Tonnes of snow and ice were swept to the side of the pitch in front of the Caterpillar and Holland & Barrett stands before the heatdome was inflated with warm air for the first time on Wednesday afternoon. It will remain inflated until matchday on Sunday.

Daytime temperatures over the next three days are expected to remain around freezing with overnight lows predicted to be around -4C/-5C. Temperatures at Welford Road reached a low of -8C on Tuesday night.

Snow is forecast for Leicester on Friday afternoon. Tigers have a team on standby to clear any snow with the aid of Leicester City Council, main club sponsor Caterpillar, who are ready to bring in a Telehandler to help with any clear-up, and Breedon Aggregates, who are on standby with a tipper truck to take any snow away from the ground.

Snow is expected to clear on Saturday, says ITV Central weather presenter Lucy Kite, but it will remain bitterly cold with the chance of the occasional light snow shower.

“Sunday once again will be very cold with highs just above freezing,” she said.  “The easterly wind will also add to the chill factor. In summary, be prepared for a bitterly cold weekend!”
