Chairman praises team effort behind the scenes

Chairman Peter Tom CBE praised the team effort behind the scenes to ensure that Leicester Tigers' Heineken Cup clash with Toulouse went ahead.

The Tigers groundstaff, led by head groundsman Steve Packwood, worked round the clock in the week leading up to Sunday’s winner-takes-all Pool 2 clash.

The pitch was covered with frost sheets last week and the heatdome was brought in by Sports Stadia Services on Wednesday to protect the playing surface from the elements.

Teams worked to clear snow from the Holland & Barrett Terrace, walkways and around the stadium while a Telehandler from main sponsor Caterpillar and a truck from Breedon Aggregates were brought in to take the snow away. Leicester City Council gritted the roads around the Welford Road stadium.

Their hard work was rewarded when Tigers secured top spot in Pool 2 and a place in the Heineken Cup quarter-finals with a nail-biting 9-5 victory over Toulouse.

And Tom said: “It was a great team effort by everybody, Steve and his team, Caterpillar, Breedon Aggregates, and by the fans to get a 24,000 capacity crowd.

“There has been a lot of hard work to get the game on – it’s been fantastic.

“I think it was a special day, with the minute’s silence for Neil Head, who was one of the boys in the background. One of the great strengths of the Tigers is that there are an awful lot of people in the background doing a lot of work that nobody sees or hears about.”
