A "good workmanlike performance" in the defeat of London Wasps on Saturday kept Leicester Tigers in the shake-up for semi-final places in the LV= Cup.

Tigers scored five tries in a 34-8 win over Wasps at Welford Road and have won two out of three games in the pool stages of the competition.

Sale Sharks top Pool 2 with 10 points, but Tigers (9 points), Cardiff Blues (5) and Worcester Warriors (5) are all mathematically still capable of claiming a place in the knockout rounds with one round remaining.

Director of rugby Richard Cockerill saw Vereniki Goneva score two tries on his return after injury, with Michael Noone, Logovi’i Mulipola and Mathew Tait adding the others.

Cockerill said: “We made a lot of changes after last week, we have the England boys away and we were a bit disjointed at times because a lot of these guys haven’t played together for a while, but we controlled it pretty much from start to finish.

“Wasps brought a very mixed team, with some young guys in there, and I would have liked us to be a bit sharper at times, but overall it was a good workmanlike performance and a good win. We still have half a chance of qualifying with a round to play at the Scarlets next week.”

Goneva returned to first-team action with his third and fourth tries of the season, while Boris Stankovich, Scott Hamilton, Matt Cornwell and Richard Thorpe were among the pther senior men who gained important game-time and Tait grabbed his first try for the club.

Tigers go to the Scarlets in Round 4 on Sunday (1pm) before hosting London Welsh at Welford Road in the Aviva Premiership on Saturday, February 9 (3pm).
