Parling dots down for England

Geoff Parling celebrated his first international try by saying England must keep improving through the RBS 6 Nations.

Leicester Tigers second row Parling dotted down in a 38-18 win over Scotland at Twickenham on Saturday as England got the campaign off to a flying start.

“Faz put the ball to me in our 22 and I managed to put the wheels on, step a few, chip over and gather it and Ash dive into the corner. Is that how it went?” Parling joked afterwards following his first Test try, getting on the end of a long pass from fly-half Owen Farrell after a break by Ben Young and running in on the left.

“It was a great ball by Faz and I was just thinking ‘I’m in here’ and I was pleased to get over.

“We’re pleased with the win because we wanted to back up what we did against New Zealand in the autumn and get the campaign off to a good start.”

Parling, who topped the lineout stats and tackle count for England, told Talking Rugby: “There was a lot of attacking intent from the team and we did a lot of good things.

"Scotland were always going to be tough. They picked a big pack and a big backline and they were always going to get stuck in so we are pleased with the final score and the outcome.

“We weren’t at our best but there is another level to go and we will need it in coming games.

“We’ll get a bit of confidence from the game and we’ll also have a critical look at the areas we need to work on.

“There’s a great environment in the squad, lots of competition for places, and the lads are just keen and enthusiastic and very positive. But it is all about getting better and growing as a team together all the time.”

England go to Ireland in the second round of fixtures on Sunday.
