Defeat for Under-20s in Ireland

Leicester Tigers Academy duo Henry Purdy and Harry Wells made their England Under-20 debuts in Friday's Six Nations Championship match against Ireland in Athlone.

But they were unable to enjoy a winning start, going down 16-15 after a late try from Irish wing Rory Scholes and a match-winning conversion by Tom Daly.

England were down to 14 men for the majority of the game after flanker Ross Moriarty was shown a red card for a dangerous tackle on scrum-half Luke McGrath.

Fly-half Henry Slade scored all of England’s points with five penalties from five.

Purdy started his first game at this age-group level on the wing but had to join the England pack at scrum time after Moriarty's dismissal.

Wells, who made his Tigers debut in the LV= Cup game at home to Wasps a fortnight ago and started last Sunday’s game against the Scarlets in Llanelli, was used as a 65th-minute replacement for flanker Joel Conlon.
