Tigers turn up the heat in training

The heat was on for the Leicester Tigers squad when they took on a training session with a difference.

Tigers first-team players joined the Wednesday morning regulars at Bikram Yoga Leicester for a Bikram Yoga class. During the 90-minute session, the squad were taken through 26 postures in 40C temperatures and 40 per cent humidity.

“I felt so bad it must be good for you!” joked club captain Geordan Murphy afterwards. “Before the door was closed I had a full-on body sweat!

“Rachel the instructor was very good with us. She gave us the right amount of guidance to get the most out of it. All of the boys stayed in there and finished it.”

Centre Anthony Allen added: “That’s the second time I have done it and it is easier the second time. We do similar lower limb stuff with our rehab team but the heat makes it 10 times harder.”

Tigers director of rugby Richard Cockerill is a regular visitor to the practice in Friar Lane, Leicester. He said: “Yoga is good, it helps to reinvigorate and is good for muscles and joints, and we thought we’d go and do something different. It is good healthy exercise and balance for your lifestyle.”

Libby Nockles, Bikram Yoga Leicester director, said: “It was wonderful having so many of the Leicester Tigers players down for a Bikram Yoga class.

“For some it was their first class, which can be a challenge, but every single player did incredibly well, not only for staying in the class for the full 90 minutes but to actually attempt each posture.

“Hopefully, we will see more back in the studio in the future.”
