'Spreaders' looking forward to Welford Road return

It's not just big-name players who are returning to Welford Road this weekend for the Legends match, as Tony Spreadbury will take charge as referee.

Former international referee Spreadbury, known as ‘Spreaders’ throughout rugby, will take out his boots and whistle again and says he cannot wait.

He will take charge of the game on Sunday which is being organised in aid of Louis Deacon’s benefit year and the Matt Hampson Foundation.

The Foundation is close to Spreadbury’s heart as he was at the national squad scrum session when Matt Hampson suffered his neck injury in 2005 and, as a full-time paramedic before joining the RFU, he administered emergency help including cardiac massage before the ambulance arrived to assist the young prop.

“I still love refereeing,” says Spreadbury. “To be asked to referee Sunday’s game with all the high-quality players on show was fantastic.

“It’ll be great to see all those players back on the pitch and reminisce about the games we’ve been involved in before.

“I obviously know Matt well too and I’m looking forward to the game immensely.”

Tickets for Sunday’s Legends match are still available from the Tigers ticket office, price just £10 adults, £5 children and OAPs. Family tickets, for two adults and two children, are £20.
