Craig Newby and club mascot Welford joined more than 600 young players from across the country for Tigers Challenge, a huge mini and junior rugby festival.

A total of 48 teams from under-7 to under-12 joined Tigers coaches at Butlins Skegness for a two-day tournament.

The holiday resort hosted a fantastic weekend of rugby with a series of hard-fought games in age-group leagues.

Teams from Sheffield and Stamford rugby clubs finished top of the under-7s leagues. Huntingdon Stags 1st and 2nd team topped the leagues in the under-8s age group while Macclesfield 2nds and Ipswich 1sts led the way in the under-9s.

Ipswich and South Leicester finished top in the under-10s age-group, Derby and Stamford topped the under-11s and Spalding and Bakelock were the under-12s finalists.

Former Tigers favourite Newby joined the teams for a gala ceremony, handing out prizes and awards, while Welford posed for photos with many of the players.

“600 medals given out, 600 hands shook, 600 congrats said and 600 photos taken,” Newby tweeted after the ceremony. “Awesome to see so many kids enjoying rugby.”

The teams were all accommodated at Butlins Skegness and had access to its superb facilities, including the sub-tropical Splash Waterworld, the Laser Arena and the go-kart track.

Scott Clarke, Tigers community manager said: "Rugby is a great game with a tradition of touring. When organising mini and junior tours, the hardest thing to do is to find quality accommodation and activities for the young players to do once the rugby stops, but Butlins has that in spades and delivers on quality."

Tigers will stage a second Tigers Challenge this weekend at Butlins Minehead. And Butlins Minehead is the venue for a third Tigers Challenge on the May 4 weekend.
