Ed Slater has been named the Aviva Premiership Player of the Month for March.

The Leicester second row was in excellent form and has followed up the Goldsmiths Player of the Month Award with the Aviva Premiership gong.

Slater said: “I am extremely surprised to be the Aviva Premiership Player of the Month but I am also delighted. It is a real honour.

“It’s been a really good month with getting the Goldsmiths Player of the Month at Leicester as well.

“The team has been playing well as a group, which is massive for everyone.

“Having a run of games in the side was massive for me. My confidence was good and the team has been playing well.”

Slater was selected by a media panel – chaired by Premiership Rugby Communications Director, Paul Morgan - of Stuart Barnes, Alastair Eykyn, Ian Stafford, Nick Mullins, Mick Cleary and Jill Douglas.

Aviva Ambassador Will Greenwood is a big fan saying: “Ed Slater does what he says on the tin. A big, big lump in the engine room. Smashes things, gets up, smashes other things.

“I love having a big bruising unit that backs like to avoid. Them and us! In the world of the all singing all dancing forwards he has the frills having done some time in the back row. So he can run, tackle, and pass.

“In my second row I want lumps who bend over and push in the scrum but who can also shift move and jump in the lineout.

“I had Ed as an outside bet for an uncapped Lion. Perhaps a little far- fetched but think he is the real McCoy.”

Slater was presented with his award today at the Leicester Tigers’ training ground. He received a trophy and £500 to give to his chosen charity, The Matt Hampson Foundation.
