Morris thrilled to have tour opportunity

Niall Morris is looking forward to adding an international trip to the Aviva Premiership winner's medal after an impressive season with Leicester Tigers.

The 24-year-old, who opened the try-scoring in Saturday’s Final victory at Twickenham, is joining up with the Emerging Ireland squad to travel to the IRB Tblisi Cup in Georgia.

After eight tries in 25 appearances for Tigers this season, and 13 scores in 39 games since his switch to the club in the summer of 2011, Morris is looking forward to an international opportunity this summer.

“I got a call in late April just telling me to keep the dates open for the summer because I might be going on a tour,” says Morris.

“A couple of weeks after that I got an email to say I was on the tour to the Georgia Cup.

“I hadn’t made any plans for the summer, but now I know I’ll get a holiday after the tour and then come back for pre-season.

“You do sometimes think you might be out of sight and out of mind playing in England, so it was nice to know that is not the case and now I have an opportunity with the squad and I’m looking forward to it.”

Morris was nominated in the polls to find both the supporters’ and players’ Player of the Year at Tigers, and is keen to make the most of his international call-up after previous experience in the under-18, 19 and 20 age-groups.

“There are a lot of the Leinster boys on the trip and I know some of the guys from age-group teams too so I'll know quite a lot of the squad, which certainly helps when you go into something new,” he said.

“I don’t think many of them will have been to Georgia before so it’s a new one to tick off and it should be an interesting trip.

“It looks like a good squad, there are a lot of quality players, all young guys trying to get their opportunity.”

The Tblisi Cup has been organised as part of the International Rugby Board strategy of increasing the competition schedule for Tier Two nations. Back-to-back matches will be played on each of the three matchdays of June 7, 11 and 16 in the Georgian capital with the teams competing in a round robin format. Opposition comes from Georgia, Uruguay and a South Africa President's XV.
