Tigers world record for Scotty's Little Soldiers

Welford Road saw history made on Saturday with the longest ever continuous rugby match, organised in aid of the Scotty's Little Soldiers charity.

Teams representing Scotty’s and the Armed Forces started at 11am on Friday, after the Red Devils parachute display team had dropped in on the home of the Leicester Tigers, and played for 25 hours before the final whistle was greeted with a big cheer from an appreciative crowd on Saturday lunchtime.

The Scotty's Little Soldiers charity, which helps the children of servicemen and women who have been killed in action, was established by Nikki Scott, whose husband Corporal Lee Scott was killed in Afghanistan.

The Forces team took the honours on the scoreboard, winning 1,742 points against 828.

“I’m so proud of both teams,” said Nikki at the final whistle. “It was a really tough day for them, they are so battered and bruised and aching, but they kept going.”

Alan Knell, one of the organisers from Scotty’s Little Soldiers, said: “It was a tremendous event and well supported by the rugby community. We would also like to thank Leicester Tigers for allowing us to play at Welford Road. The staff were brilliant. We originally planned to raise £22,000, but with gift aid we are well through the £50,000 barrier.”

Tigers legend Ben Kay is a patron of the charity, which was also selected as an official charity of Louis Deacon's benefit year.
