Parling to lead the Lions

Geoff Parling will captain the British & Irish Lions for the first time in Tuesday's match against Melbourne Rebels, just 72 hours after making his Test debut or the tourists.

Leicester Tigers second-rower Parling was used as a 70th-minute replacement in Saturday’s win over Australia in the first Test and now returns to the starting line-up for the final midweek fixture of the tour.

Parling, 29, is joined in the line-up with Tigers colleagues Dan Cole and Manu Tuilagi, with the centre making his return from a shoulder injury to make a first appearance since the win over Queensland Reds two weeks ago. Ben Youngs is named among the replacements.

Lions head coach Warren Gatland said: “I am very pleased for Geoff. For him to be part of a winning Lions Test side is very special and he has shown throughout this tour that he is one of the leaders we have in the squad so we are looking forward to seeing him in that captaincy role.

“It is also good to get Manu back on the pitch after a frustrating injury. This is a good chance for him and others to put their hands up.”

Irish prop Tom Court has received a call into the squad as injury cover for Alex Corbisiero and goes straight on to the bench for Tuesday, with Mako Vunipola withdrawn from the original replacements' selection.
