Players get back to work for new season

Richard Cockerill says Leicester Tigers will not rest on their laurels as his squad returned back to work for pre-season training.

Cockerill won a third Premiership crown in five years as Tigers’ director of rugby when his side lifted the Aviva Premiership at Twickenham in May.

It was a record tenth English title for the club, but Cockerill says that is already in the past as Tigers returned to training at Oval Park to begin their preparations for the 2013/14 campaign.

“That was last year,” says Cockerill. “It doesn’t get you any points in the league next season.

“The really important thing is to forget last year and to not rest on your laurels. It’s about getting this year right because, if you don’t, you will come unstuck. The Aviva Premiership is a very difficult competition.”

Cockerill added: “It’s good to be back. We will build up to the season slowly, as we tend to do.

“We go to Geneva and play Montpellier in early August, and the last two weeks we play Jersey and Ulster.

“We won’t get too excited. I think it’s key to hit the season running and be right for it and make sure that you have a good start but you have to be thinking about the other nine months as well.”
