Newby takes breakdown clinic at Tigers Rugby Camp

Figure image
Craig Newby delivered a tackling and breakdown clinic during the Leicester Tigers Rugby Camp at Syston RFC.

Newby, who made 84 appearances for Tigers, was part of the 2010 Premiership winning squad and captained Leicester at the 2011 Aviva Premiership Final, spent the day with young players on the course on Wednesday, working them on their techniques and skills.

Alongside lead coach Ian ‘Dosser’ Smith, the former Tigers captain and head coach who made more than 300 appearances for the club, Newby also emphasised to the players the need for nutrition and hydration, particularly in the current hot spell.

Newby was joined at the Syston RFC camp by Tigers Academy products Joe Cain and Scott Steele, with all three taking part in a Q&A.

It was the first of a number of Tigers Rugby Camps that former Leicester and All Blacks back rower Newby will coach at this summer.

Newby, who is now head coach at Cambridge RUFC, is also due to coach at the Rugby Camp at Jersey RFC next week, North Walsham RFC (August 20) Melbourne RFC (August 21) and Market Harborough RFC (August 22) and the residential camp at Bishop Burton (which runs from August 5-9).

Places are still available on all Tigers Rugby Camps, which are supported by energy efficiency experts Mark Group – click here to book a place.

Tigers Rugby Camps are being run right across the Tigers region during the summer holidays, including Nottingham's Trent College and Jersey RFC next week. Click here to find one near you.

They give players who are playing contact rugby in next season’s under-9s to under-16s age groups the chance to experience top-quality rugby coaching in a professional environment. There is also a series of tag rugby camps for under-sevens and under-eights players.

All coaching is provided by our Tigers community coaching team alongside some of Tigers top senior academy coaches and players past and present, including Smith, ex hooker Troy Thacker and two-time Heineken Cup winner Glenn Gelderbloom. They will be passing on some of the tips that have taken Tigers to a record tenth English title this season.

The camps run closely to the Tigers Academy and youth rugby programme. Each player will also receive a match ticket to an allocated home game, a hot lunch (except Melbourne RFC) a Tigers Rugby Camp T-shirt, rugby ball and drinks bottle and free membership to the Junior Tigers Club.

Alternatively, phone the Tigers ticket office on 0844 856 1880 (option 2). The office is open 8.30am-5pm every weekday, until 8pm Wednesdays and 9am-5pm Saturdays.
